Focus on Fundamentals Workshop - Directing (2009)

Following the success of Asian Tales and in response to it and the growing Asian arts practitioner base, Oryza delivered a weekend workshop specifically designed to upskill and inform anyone with no previous directing experience about the basics of directing in theatre with an aim to inculcate interest in the Asian, Pacific, and Maori arts communities to learn more about the role of the director.

The workshop was helmed by Tony Forster and aimed at increasing participants’ skill levels, knowledge, and confidence in directing theatre through interactive discussions, anecdotes and practical exercises that cover a wider range of topics including:

      • Defining ‘the Director’
      • Directing different materials - existing, devised, and new work
      • The Director in rehearsal and how to survive Production Week
      • The Director's toolbox - essential skills, do’s and don'ts
      • ‘Instruction’, ‘Collaboration’ or ‘Inspiration’
      • Working across different art forms, genres, cultures, and ethnic traditions
      • This included presentations by Andrew Malmo & Simon Coleman
